This will be a period of multimodal practice and contemplation, which will give rise to the most ideal energetics for our collective discourse. We will have sessions and workshops held by our Namuna Guides, Even Closer session to connect deeply, enter regular daily practices with the Zenshinji monks, soak in the hot springs and fresh river on the land, and restore our hearts and minds.

The exchange of this experience includes accommodations, programming, and organic, local, delicious meals for five days and four nights.

I’ve been dreaming about sharing this invitation for over a decade.

Tassajara Zen Mountain Sanctuary is the stillness secluded in the valley. It is the source of the hot springs that eventually reach Esalen’s big coastal energy. Nestled deep in the La Ventana Wilderness of Big Sur, this place feels like a portal to another time. Along the edge of the creek the earth opens to hot spring water collected in Japanese bath houses. With over 50 years of continuous practice, it holds perhaps the calmest, most grounding, clear energy I’ve ever experienced.

Tassajara was chosen as the site of the first Zen monastery outside of Japan — anywhere in the world.

Tassajara remains fully cloistered in monastic Zen practice. Yet, from June through August visitors are allowed. These are usually Zen teachers and their students. Last year, namūna received an invitation from SFZN to bring a new, diverse community of practitioners, wisdom keepers, patrons and community leaders.

It’s an honor to be hosting at Tassajara, and an even greater honor to extend this invitation to you.

Our week together falls on the Summer Solstice — the best time to visit the valley.

This is NOT a formal Zen retreat (as we are not Zen teachers), but the container is held within the container of the Zen tradition. We’ll sit in the Zendo with the monks, listen to their discourses, and take part in the rhythms of daily life. Several members of our guides and community are Zen practitioners, and we’ll also be joined by guides from other lineages, yourself and we'll co-create this a truly rare and interwoven week of shared practice and vision.

It reminds me of visiting the Franciscan monks in Assisi, where monks from many traditions gathered, each honoring the others’ path. It’s such a gift to witness something like this come together. I truly hope you can be a part of it.
